Caffeine and Calories in Tea: How Many Cups a Day Should You Drink?
27 June 2026 · Berberoğlu Çay

Turkey is one of the world's biggest tea-drinking nations. But what are the caffeine and calorie values of the tea we drink every day, and how many cups is ideal?
Caffeine in tea
A glass of well-brewed black tea contains roughly half the caffeine of an average cup of coffee. In other words, tea provides a more balanced lift throughout the day without the sudden highs and crashes.
Calorie content
Plain tea has virtually zero calories. Any calories come from added sugar. Drinking it without sugar — or with just a little — keeps tea a light part of your daily routine.
How many cups a day?
For most adults, 3–5 cups of tea a day is considered a balanced amount. If you're drinking late in the evening, brewing it lighter can help avoid disrupting your sleep.
